Who is Sho Madjozi ?
Sho Madjozi is an award winning South African rapper and poet . Madjozi was born Maya Wegerif and grew up in Shirley , Limpopo. She rose to fame when she got featured on okmalumkoolkat ‘s ngiyashisa bhe and DJ Maphorisa ‘s Probleme.
Growing Up
Maya travelled a lot growing up due to her parents. In her late teens they moved to Tanzania , which became her second home. She got to learn swahili while staying In Tanzania which has proved beneficial as it has now become part of her music.
After she moved to Senegal , She picked up another language while staying there ‘French’.
Sho Madjozi also studied African Studies and Creative Writing in America at Mount Holyoke College. thereafter she returned to South Africa and took up a fellowship in writing at the University of Johannesburg.
Madjozi ‘s earlier work was mostly spoken word and poetry. Maya used to go under the the stage name ‘Maya The Poet’. She Later started rapping under a new name that would become her stage name ‘Sho Madjozi’. She became significant for choosing to rap in in her mother tongue Xitsonga ,And states that it is important to her to remain true to the language.
Her rise to Fame
Although she entered the music scene through a feature from Okmalumkoolkat , It was Her single Dumi hi Phone that gave her the big break she needed. The song became a number 1 in many radio station for weeks, and she started getting numerous gigs nationwide.
She went on to release many other hit singles such as Huku and her debut album ‘Limpopo Champions League’
