Who Is DJ Maphorisa ?

Born Themba Sekowe in a township called Soshanguve in Pretoria . Themba is popularly known in the music industry as DJ Maphorisa. He is an award winning Music Producer and DJ , he is responsible for a lot of hits in S.A.

Getting into The Music Industry

DJ Maphorisa first came into the industry back in the days of pretoria ‘s hit maker ‘ Bojo Mujo’. Maphorisa was an intern at Bojo Mujo ‘s House Therapy production. He was still mostly behind the scenes.

Joining Kalawa Jazzmee

The he later joined Kalawa Jazzme and he was responsible for reviving Kalawa at the time. He introduced the afro dance sound to the stable , by producing albums as well such as Dr Malinga , Vetkuk and Mahoota ‘s albums.

Then later on they formed a group called Uhuru , that featured Maphorisa , DJ Clap , DJ Buckz , Celimpilo an Mapiano. In 2013 they released the smash hit single ‘Ytjukutja’ , which was one of the biggest songs in the entire African continent. It also took song of the year at that time.

That was just the beginning , the following year they produced Khona and Happiness for Mafikizolo. Khona topped many music charts and also won song of the year at the MTV Africa Music awards in 2014.

Life After Kalawa

After their contract with Kalawa ended , everyone in the group went their separate ways . DJ Maphorisa went on to produced Hip Hop star Kwesta ‘s hit single ‘Ngud’ feat Cassper Nyovest. The song was a huge success and DJ Maphorisa started getting the recognition he deserved .

From there he went on collaborate with a lot of African giants such as Major Lazer on Particula , and Wizkid on Soweto Baby.

Around 2017, when gqom took over , he was in the forefront of the genre with hit songs such as Midnight starring feat DJ Tira , Busiswa and Moonchild, as well Oncamnce and more

In 2019 , Phori was once again in the forefront on the new popular genre , Amapiano . He collaborated with Kabza De Small in releasing their debut amapiano album titled Scorpion Kings. The album fast became South Africa ‘s favourite with hits such as amantombazane featuring Samthing Soweto & MfR Souls . Other hits on the album were Vula vula with Nokwazi , Koko and more .

The scorpion kings collabo proved very fruitful thus they continued releasing other albums , such as the return of the scorpion kings and Once upon a time in lockdown.
